The photographer was probably my great grandfather Adolph. My great grandmother Clara died a few months before this picture was taken.

Nobody smiled in those old photos. Today that makes them so different it is jarring.

They were afraid to move and blur the picture. Somber expressions were easier to maintain during the exposure than smiles. But my collection of old photographs does contain some charming light-hearted images as well. J.
